Clematis paniculata or Bush Clematis is endemic to New Zealand where is is locally referred to as Puawhananga (Flower of the Skies), New Zealand Clematis and Bridal Veil.
Clematis paniculata is a woody vine that grows in it’s natural habitat from the base of a tree to have a long, bare trunk (7-8”diameter at base) with the foliage and flowers in the canopy, up to 30 Ft above the ground for an amazing display.
Like many New Zealand plants it has distinct juvenile and adult stages. In the wild it is mostly found growing in forests, spreading into tree tops where it produces masses of pure white male flowers (4-5” Inches) in spring.
Once planted out, keep roots cool, moist and shaded as in its natural bush habitat, and plant near a tree, shrub or support it can clamber through. Then leave it be- native clematis prefer not to be disturbed. Will climb through a tree or other support to 30 Ft. Zone 7 - 9
