The SMS Rheinland was launched in 1908 and was one of the first dreadnaught ships built for the German Navy. The ship served in WW I and was scraped by the Allies in 1920. The postmark on this postcard is Nov. 23, 1915. Previous to this date (Aug. 1915), the ship and crew had been engaged in battle against the Russians at the Gulf of Riga. The postcard is postmarked Wilhelmshaven, which is the location of a deep water port and German Naval base. A light German naval postmark can be seen behind the Wilhelmshaven mark.
