Vintage Art Deco Revere Chrome & Bakelite Magazine Rack Designed by Fred FarrDesigned by Industrial Designer Fred Farr in 1936 for Revere Copper and Brass Incorporated, Rome NY. Measures 17 and 1/2 inches tall by 11 and 1/4 inches wide at the widest point by 8 inches deep. Chromed metal with a black bakelite handle. Incised "Revere Rome NY" on the bottom. This magazine rack was listed in the 1937 Revere Gifts catalog, and described as "Employs the book scroll principle. Will accommodate up to 50 magazines of all sizes in the self expanding scroll springs. Periodicals and newspapers can be slipped in and taken out easily. Polished chromium with solid ball floor rests. Handles of chromium or catalin." About the Designer"Fred D. Farr (1894-1969) designed the entire line of "scroll bookends and magazine racks that Revere touted "as the modern successor to bulky bookends. The scroll holds books and magazines in place through spring action. In its 1937 Gifts catalog, Revere notes that the basic scroll with unadorned hemisphere was the largest selling bookend ever designed. Farr also designed the simple but elegant "service cup" a chromium bowl with a red or blue tumbler for serving fruit, shrimp cocktails, or fruit juice and the "smokette" a unique smoking set composed of satin chromium base with removable glass containers to hold cigarettes and ashes. There is chrome wear in areas where the magazines rubbed against the rack and surface scratches consistent with age and use. There are several deep short scratches on one of the ball feet.
