"Abandon hope all ye who enter here" [Dante]
This was the dramatic warning given in Murray's Handbook for South Wales in 1877 to visitors entering the industrial heart of Swansea; The Lower Swansea Valley. Once the largest single area of industrial dereliction in Britain, the Lower swansea valley is now an area of opportunity and optimism, inspiring a genuine hope for the future rather than the despair of the past.
The Valley is recognised internationally by the Council of Europe as an excellent example of how the challenges of urban dereliction and deprivation can be tackled successfully by local effort.
The first part of the book describes the history of the Lower Swansea Valley, whilst the second part shows how the town planning process can be used by local people to coordinate action on a vast scale by many agencies and individuals
