Massive 552-page yearbook for the University of Illinois. This is The Illio of 1938, Volume 45.
A significant yearbook for sports collectors, as it is a tribute to the 25 years of service of the Illini's legendary football coach Robert Zuppke (1879-1957). Enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame in 1951, Zuppke's most famous pupil was Harold "Red" Grange, who starred for the Orange and Blue from 1923-25. Zuppke's Illinois teams were recognized as national champions in 1914, 1919, 1923 and 1927. He introduced the huddle in the early 1920s, along with other offensive innovations.
Zuppke is prominent in several pages (see images). Plus, a beautiful panoramic sepia shot of a packed Memorial Stadium in Champaign provides the inner covers for the front and back of the yearbook.
Complete and in top condition, with only the slightest wear at the top and bottom of spine. Clean, crisp pages, with no writing, stains, dampness or other defects. Beautiful blue/black leather cover with orange lettering. Yearbook weighs in at a hefty five pounds.
