The Chip Inlay ProcessChoose a suitable wood species that is relatively dry so it won't shrink after you've applied the inlay. Wood inlay expert Stephen Hatcher says that species ranging from soft alder to hard maple are all suitable, as long as the moisture content doesn't exceed 12 percent. Make the piece as you normally would, whether it is a table, pen or wood vase. Then, use a tool to remove the wood where you would like to place the inlay. Some woodworkers use chisels while others opt for a small rotary tool. Apply wood hardener to extremely soft wood to ensure a crisp edge.Apply the Inlay•Crush large pieces of turquoise, or choose stone that is already crushed and ready to be applied. Both types are commonly available at rock shops or through online retailers. Start with the largest pieces of turquoise first and lay them in place. Add super-thin superglue to hold the larger pieces in place. Then, begin filling in the voids with smaller pieces of turquoise. Repeat the application of superglue. It's better for the inlay's clarity to build the turquoise/superglue mixture up in small layers. Finally, add the finest, powdery pieces of turquoise. Fine metal shavings may also be used at the end for a metallic accent. Add another layer of superglue.Finish the Inlay•Use a power sander to make the inlay even with the wood's surface. Wear a mask during this process to limit inhalation of wood, glue and stone dust. Apply cyanoacrylate (CA) glue to repair any pieces of stone that pop out during this process. Start with coarse sandpaper and progressively work toward finer grits. Fill any small gaps that occur with glue and sand down. Polish and buff the surface. Wipe off any sanding dust and apply the final coating of stain, wax and varnish to the wood. <a href="http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/index.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash"> To view the showcase you need Flash 6 or higher.
