As most avid carousel collectors know, horses were not the only animals to appear on carousels. In the late 18th century, Charles Looff's first carousel featured a variety of creatures, which were extremely popular. Carver Frederick Savage adorned his carousels with galloping chickens and flying pigs. The fanciful and detailed works of these and other early master carvers were the inspiration for the Willitts Countryside Carousel.
