In each of these richly textured stories, Elizabeth Spencer describes a time of awakening, of the realization of how a life came to be what it is. "The Business Venture" tells of the shifting tensions, both racial and sexual, within a group of white Southerners when one of the women goes into business with a black man. "Jean-Pierre" examines the mixed emotions a young English-Canadian experiences when she marries an older man, a French-Canadian. And, in the title story, a seventeen-year-old finds, after her mother's death, that her parents' marriage was not as happy as it seemed.
