When all the other animals at the pet shop find homes, the cats decide to disguise themselves as other animals so they will be adopted too.
The story begins in Mr. Bungle's Pick-A-Dilly Pet Shop, which is full of aardvarks, armadillos, elephants, puppies, birds, bunnies and lots of cats. Unfortunately, nobody bought the cats. Ed-grrr, the dog, used to tease the cats that no one wnated them beause they were so common.
The cats decide to disguise themselves as other kinds of animals. They head off the the county fair where they have many fun adventures, and win prizes for being such unusual mice, rabbits, puppies, ducks and parrots in the most interesting pet contest. This makes them happy and they return to the pet shop convinced that their disguises are working. At the pet shop, they each hopped into the cage with the animals they were disguised as. Soon they were picked by children and their parents as pets. In the process, the children who bought them realized that the Purr-tenders were cats and still loved them, but the parents were fooled. "And, just as sure as cats purr, all the other Purr-tenders found happy homes with children who loved them and kept their secrets, too."
