Peruvian Heirloom, also know as Apple Chili or Caballo Pepper.
Velvet-leaved plants with large purple blossoms and black seeded fruits. 2 inch apple shaped peppers ripen from green to yellow. It has thick fleshy walls like a bell pepper, but is very hot. It has been cultivated in Bolivia and Peru for thousands of years.
A very notable feature of this species is its ability to resist temperatures down to 5 Celsius below zero.
Requires an extended growing season with long day lengths and cooler temperatures than other peppers. Best grown in containers on a porch or other shaded area. They grow into 9 Ft woody plants relatively quickly, and live up to 15 years, which gives them, especially with age, an almost tree-like appearance. Very prolific and comes back and produces year after year.
The tough black seeds are slow to germinate and require patience, therefore it's best to start in fall for spring planting. Harvest 95-120 days from transplant.
Locoto is among the oldest of domesticated peppers, up to as much as 5000 years.
