The Neem tree is a tropical evergreen tree native to India and is also found in other southeast countries. In India, neem is known as “the village pharmacy” because of its healing versatility, and it has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for more than 4,000 years due to its medicinal properties.
Neem is a fast-growing tree that can reach a height of 40-60 ft. It is evergreen, but in severe drought it may shed most or nearly all of its leaves. The branches are wide and spreading.
The flowers are white and fragrant and the fruit is a smooth olive-like drupe which varies in shape from elongate oval to nearly round.
Pest and disease control Neem is a key ingredient in non-pesticidal management providing a natural alternative to synthetic pesticides. Neem seeds are ground into a powder that is soaked overnight in water and sprayed onto the crop.
