A Double Barrelled Detective Story first edition book 1902 by Mark Twain is for sale. A Double Barrelled Detective Story is illustrated by Lucius Hitchcock. This Mark Twain book was published by Harper and Brothers [New York and London] in 1902, and has the date to the Title Page and to the reverse on the Copyright Page.
The Title Page additionally has “By Mark Twain Author of “Huckleberry Finn” “Life on the Mississippi” “A Yankee in King Arthur’s Court” etc”; and to the front board a Mark Twain quotation in gilt that reads:
“We Ought Never To Do Wrong
When People Are Looking”
The original red boards have profuse gilt decoration to the front board and the spine, with Mark Twain’s autograph printed in gilt to the bottom right corner of the front board. The boards are in Very Good condition with a small knock to the front board’s fore edge; creasing to the spine where the book has been opened and read; knocks and fraying to the top and bottom of the spine; and small marks to the back board. However, despite the minor imperfections this is still a very attractive set of boards for this scarce Mark Twain book.
There are 179 numbered pages, top edge gilt remaining untrimmed, with decorated illustrated endpapers to the front and rear of the book and a frontispiece and 6 full page illustrations by Lucius Hitchcock. The pages are in Good to Very Good condition with some pages opened crudely resulting in some marginal losses; and all plates are present with one loosely inserted.
