An amazing and collectible piece of late Victorian stationary. Made by Hotchkiss & Co., of Norwalk, Connecticut, this is the first No.1 (there were 3 no. 1s) issued. The body says 1896.
Made of cast iron, it is a sturdy item. There is a rear pivot, for lifting over documents, and a large, spring loaded "push down" button on the top.
It is in excellent condition, with only minor wear and tarnishing, certainly considering the items age.
It is marked on both sides "Hotchkiss No.1". Beneath the main body is the makers mark and patent date "Dec. 1 1895". The base is marked with both "Made in USA" and "1896".
The stapler measures 4.5" (11.5cm) tall and is 4" (10cm) in length.
