Betel is a shade loving subtropical vine in the same plant family as black pepper. It is a perennial herb with creeping rhizomes with thin, heart-shaped leaves 4-5 inches long and wide. Likes to be kept moist but does not tolerate over watering. It prefers rich well drained soil with partial shade. This is a very easy plant to grow. It makes a good ground cover under trees in subtropical and tropical areas or in cooler climates, a delightful indoor hanging plant.
In asian Cruisine the leaves are used to wrap miang kham, a traditional snack or used as a salad. It is also used for medicinal purposes, to relieve a wide range of symptoms including inflammation.
