" The present list....is an attempt to discover every name in reasonably current use, to identify it according to an approved authority, and make it a matter of record so someone can identify it. For this reason it works from the vernacular name to the scientific, since once the latter is known, it has been identified. Even where botanists insist upon juggling genera and species, all scientific names are matters of record somewhere, and can be run down.
This list includes plants found in gardens, sold in florists' shops, grown in conservatory collections, wild flowers, and many species used in folk medicine or mentioned in English and American literature. Vernacular names from various regions of the United States, particularly the Kentucky Mountains and the Great Smokies, are also given."
