A very unique and unusual work of Folk Art. These are Portuguese Festival Dolls. There are 11 dolls that are all connected by metal wires. They all bend forward, at the same time, when you push the rod upwards. They look like they might be weaving.
These were used as entertainment at a festival. It makes sense that it ended up on Cape Cod, since there is a large Portuguese Fishing Community in Provincetown. The piece has double bottle caps which clap as cymbals and the guy on top rings the big bell when the rod is pushed. The base is not original to the piece and is not included. The faces are hand painted paper mache. Their clothes are made of linen, cotton and various cloth materials. Overall excellent condition. Some of the clothes have small tears. It is a little dusty (found in an attic.) No serious damage or repairs. Period wear and patina consistent with age and use.
