A rare opportunity to own these two early Charles Dickens Christmas books, The Chimes and A Christmas Carol. Both are in matching bindings and are published by Chapman and Hall, London, as per the Copyright pages that also include the publication dates. Each book measures 4¼ x 6 inches. The bindings are half calf over marbled board, with brown leather spines with a partitioned spine and gilt lettering and decoration; and matching brown leather corners.
The full title for The Chimes is given to the Copyright Page as: “The Chimes: A Goblin Story of Some Bells That Rang An Old Year Out And A New Year In”. The binding is in Very Good condition with wear to the leather and the edges.
There are 153 numbered pages, with marbled endpapers to the front and back of the book to match the binding; top edge gilt; a contemporary inscription to the blank front page dated 1903; the colour frontispiece and colour decorated Title Page opposite; the Copyright Page with the printed date of 1899; and a small bookseller’s label to the rear endpaper. The pages are tightly bound and in overall Very Good condition.
A Christmas Carol is dated 1900 to the Copyright Page, that provides its full title: “A Christmas Carol: In Prose; Being A Ghost Story of Christmas; By Charles Dickens”. The same binding is given to A Christmas Carol as to The Chimes, and the same wear exists to the brown leather, the spine and edges. The binding is still attractive and in Very Good condition.
There are 144 numbered pages, with marbled endpapers to the front and back of the book to match the binding; top edge gilt; a contemporary inscription dated 1903 to the front blank page; the colour frontispiece opposite the attractive colour decorated Title Page; the Copyright Page has the date of 1900; and there is a small bookseller’s label adhered to the rear pastedown. The pages are in overall Very Good condition.
This is an attractive pair of Victorian Charles Dickens Christmas books.
