The Washington Post has called James M. Cain "the poet of the hard-boiled school of the American novel." and in Mildred Pierce, the story of a divorcee, her shiftless husband and her monstrous daughter, both the poetry and the toughness are apparent. Although the physical violence in the book is minimal, the spiritual violence is shattering.
