CONDITION: Piece is in excellent condition for its age. The image and lettering have no marks, tears, smudges or discoloration. There is a small tear in the lower margin of the piece, well below the image and lettering, which could easily be covered in re-framing. The light wooden frame has been disassembled at lower side, and would need to be reattached to be re-used.
About the Artist: As a young man, Robert Batty, 1789 - 1848, was a student of Caius College, at Cambridge, England. He joined the Grenedier Guards in 1813, and rose through the ranks. As an officer, he served at Waterloo and the Peninsular War. He was wounded at Waterloo, which ended his military career.
He traveled widely for the rest of his life, producing exquisite drawings which he later published in numerous books. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy, London, 1813-48.
In May, 1977, at a sale at Mentmore, sixty of Batty's original drawings from the publication "Hanoverian and Saxon Scenery," fetched £40,000 a price that was unprecedented.
