He was on the national championship swimmimg team, but a budding Olymic career was cut short by an appendectomy.After studying at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, he became a contract player for Paramount Pictures. He also appeared on the New York stage in the 1940's and began his television career in the 1950's. His most memorable television role was as the title character in the ABC series "Ben Casey" (1961). Mr. Edwards also directed a number of "Ben Casey" (1961) episodes as well as episodes of a number of other television series.
