Synopsis:
This family-oriented holiday drama takes place in Alabama in 1957 and centers upon the heartwarming relationship between a lonely white boy and his black nanny. When she returns South to be with her family for Christmas, her young charge follows her, creating all kinds of complications. Singer Natalie Cole makes her feature-film debut as the nanny. What in this movie is anticipated? The coal-black complexion of Natalie Cole? The fact that she is the staring actress? (I kept waiting for her to break out in song.) Is it the bond the white child forms with his parents' servant? How quickly the mother of the child turns on this servant who is 'just like a member of the family?' Where Lily goes when trouble is suspected? How the boy reacts when he finds out? Her true relationship with family members? The eventual outcome of compounding transgressions? Not much of what you see is expected. The fact that Natalie portrays an uneducated Southerner neutralizes anticipation for a dramatic performance with enough surprises to make the whole lesson in family ties worthwhile viewing. (Natalie Cole has an unrelated album called "Take a Look." Interestingly, every song title has something to do with this movie.) I'm glad to find this Christmas movie starring Natalie Cole. I'd seen it a few years ago on cable & loved it. Though I haven't seen it since; I still remember the story of Lily, housekeeper for a wealthy white woman with a little boy(Brian Bonsall, the littlest Keaton on Family Ties). All hell breaks loose when Brian runs away to join Lily on her trip home for the holidays. His mom thinks Lily kidnapped the boy & reports it to the police. Get this video & see a great holiday story, see the end result for yourself & enjoy! Highly recommended!
