Stella Steyn
Stella Steyn (1907-1987) was a Dublin-born artist of Russian and German heritage. She was born in 1907 to dentist William Steyn and Bertha Jaffe, who had moved to Ireland from Eastern Europe, initially settling in Limerick.
Stella Steyn studied at Alexandrea College and the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art. In 1926, she went to Paris to study at the Académie Scandinave and at La Grande Chaumière. She enrolled at the Bauhaus in Germany in 1931. While in Paris she met Samuel Beckett as well as James Joyce, who later asked her to provide illustrations for Finnegan's Wake.
In 1928 she was awarded the Tailteann Silver Medal at the Metropolitan in Dublin.
In 1938 she married David Ross, an English linguist scholar, whom she had met while in Germany in 1933.
Stella Steyn was a prolific artist. One of her paintings, Still Life - Flowers, was displayed in the ex British Prime Minister's offical residence, chosen by his wife, Sarah Brown.
Our collection of Stella Steyn drawings dates from the 1960 to 1962 with excellent provenence being from the estate of her nephew.
