Pindo Palm - Jelly Palm
Butia capitata
The South American pindo palm, Butia capitata, sets a delicious, edible fruit. The berries are tasty when eaten raw but they also make wonderful jelly and wine. This is why the pindo is commonly called the jelly palm.
The fruits form in dense clusters weighing as much as 50 pounds per stem. Each 1 inch, bright yellow or orange berry houses 1-3 seeds. The fruit is fragrant, juicy and tastes of pineapple and apricot.
Butia capitata features pale blue-green or blue-gray recurving fronds which grow out of a stout, heavily textured trunk.
It can grow to over 18 feet in accommodating climates.
While the tree is still fairly short, the arching fronds can touch the ground.
The flower stalks emerge from the trunk near the base of the fronds. In late spring or early summer they burst into bloom bearing a profusion of tiny magenta flowers.
This palm can withstand a considerable amount of frost being hardy down to 10 degrees F. It is the most hardy of the feather (pinnate leaved) palms. It is also drought tolerant and low maintenance.
It will grow in sun or shade. Shade will cause the fronds to grow larger and "greener". Unlike many palms, pindos transplant easily. They also don't seem to have a preference for one side of the U.S. over the other. They will live happily on the east or west coast.
The jelly palm is slow growing and so can thrive in a pot for years.
The Pindo Palm is one of the most popular palms in the world because of its stunning appearance and cold hardiness that makes is great choice for landscape in USDA zones 8-11.
Propagation is by seed. To get pindo palm seed to germinate, plant it fresh and prepare to wait. The seed is very slow to sprout. Keep the seed container warm and damp and eventually, you will succeed.
You will get 25 quality very fresh seeds
