This is a beautiful Banin Aran (Irish Gaelic: Geansaí Árann) size 8 U.S. (EU 128, Ireland - UK 30) hand-knitted children's sweater - cardigan woven in the traditional Aran clan designs made in Ireland.

According to the folklore and history behind the original Aran sweater, the name originates from the harsh weather of the Aran Islands off the west coast of Ireland, at Galway Bay.

Home to many traditional fishermen and farmers and birthplace of the ultimate symbol of the Irish clan heritage passed down from generation to generation up to this day.

The attributes of these sweaters made them suitable for the protection of the fishermen and farmers against the harsh weather.

The sweater being water repellent, kept the rain from penetrating, keeping them dry.

An Aran cardigan can absorb 30% of its weight before feeling wet. The natural wool fibers used in the sweaters is breathable, drawing water vapor away from the skin and releasing it into the air, maintaining the body at ideal temperature. Wool has an excellent insulating capacity due to the high volume of air it contains, protecting from excessive cold and heat.

The difference between hand-knitted sweaters and their hand-loomed counterparts is that hand knitting takes a lot more time, effort and wool to make. Both use the finest yarns and are made with tender loving care. Hand-knitted cardigans are more personal and usually come with the knitter's name on the tag.

From the very beginning, a pattern or so unique to each clan was closely guarded as it represented their religious and otherwise everyday identity as well as the landmark formation of rocks and nature found in the Aran Islands.

Even today, the Aran cardigan fascinates with its meaningful designs and simplistic beauty.

Some Meanings Attributed to Aran Stitches

For those who are interested, these are the meanings most often associated with commonly found stitch patterns in Aran knitting.

The most commonly seen Aran stitch is the cable, of which there are many variations. These are said to symbolize fishermen’s ropes.

The blackberry stitch represents nature. Some call it the trinity stitch and give it religious significance.
The Moss stitch, said to symbolise abundance and growth. It is often used as a ‘filler’ in diamonds. The Honeycomb is a said to be a lucky stitch, signifying plenty and in the case of fishermen a good catch. Lattice or Basket stitches to represent the fisherman’s basket – again an omen of a good catch.

The Ladder of Life and Tree of Life represent the stages of life. They are sometimes given a religious significance, symbolizing a pilgrim’s path to salvation. Plaited or braided stitches said to represent the interweaving strands of life. Diamonds to represent the shape of the fishing mesh, and wealth and success.
