Inexplicably, an external ""they,"" an unknown but very real flying ""object,"" appears, hovering, observing, tantalizingly invulnerable, in effect holding hostage the scientific satellite and all aboard, including a pregnant scientist-mother and her partner in experimental procreation. Its nature and source seem beyond calculating-its chilling intent, and message, increasingly clear: that ""no human child shall be born in the cosmos.""
