Most microwaves are equipped with rotating glass turntable plates. These plates aid in even cooking and heat distribution by constantly turning the food items placed atop them. These specially manufactured plates or trays are constructed with borosilicate heat resistant glass which makes them very durable, resistant to thermal shock, and heat resistant. These glass trays can withstand sudden changes in temperature as well. Borosilicate glass is a type of glass with the main glass-forming constituents silica and boron oxide. Borosilicate glasses are known for having very low coefficients of thermal expansion (~5 × 10−6 /°C at 20°C), making them resistant to thermal shock, more so than any other common glass.

:: Replacing Broken or Missing Trays

Microwave trays are not all the same. Many look alike or have nearly the same measurements, but matching up a replacement by sight is difficult. Most microwave trays are model specific - specific models use specific trays. The most common method to locate the correct microwave tray is to first determine the model number of your microwave, then the tray part number. The next method is measuring the tray itself.

You can usually find the model number on the same label that has the serial number and manufacturing date. This label, or tag, is usually found inside the microwave on the left hand wall or on the back of the unit. It can sometimes be located around the inside of the door frame or on the side of the control panel frame. Once you have the model number, you can check with the manufacturer online to obtain the part number.

If you don't have the actual model number of the microwave or cannot locate the part number of the tray, you can measure the tray if you're able to do so. If it's broken and your trying to replace it, it may be difficult to get an accurate mesurement. For round trays, first measure across the front of the tray completly, then measure the distance of the clear ring in the glass on the bottom of he tray from the outside edges. For square trays, simply measure both the width and length.
