A philosophical second half is appended to the original plot giving it a more moral outlook.Aditya (Sachin Khedekar) is a workaholic who has no time for his family. Let down by his perpetually moneymaking mindset, Aditya's wife and daughter leave him alone over a weekend. After a Sunday that goes by around not so pleasant people, he wakes up the next morning to realize that the Sunday gone by is repeating in his life, as he comes across the same people in same situations who he encountered a day before. The occurrences keep repeating day in and day out as Aditya gets eternally struck in the Sunday with the impending Monday never coming across.Therein he meets a random blind man Benaam Kumar (Anupam Kher), who he strangely believes, would end his dilemma. Benaam helps him enjoy the smaller joys of life and tries to bring back the smile that had gone missing in his fast-paced mechanical lifestyle.Barring Anupam Kher's character, the film largely seeks its spirit from the Bill Murray comedy. But despite the improbable setup, the film never ventures into the sci-fi zone and is grounded as a basic human drama. The recurring sequence of events, beyond bringing some genuine laughs, also broadly symbolizes how an average human is stuck in his daily existence and is merely surviving over living life.While we have often seen protagonists living life to the fullest on learning about their terminal illness in films ranging from Anand to Dasvidaniya, the 'Groundhog Day' phenomena gives a new dimension to the same conflict. After his initial disbelief and ambiguity, Aditya starts using the time warp to his advantage, learning things like swimming, painting, rock climbing, et al - for which he never had time earlier. With no worries of tomorrow, the foremost human tendency would be to overindulge in everything from food, wine, woman and gambling, which the film smartly taps in the initial reels.As the narrative treads into the second half (where it attempts to gain its own identity), it takes a philosophical route. Anupam Kher's Benaam Kumar almost turns out to be a self-help book to Aditya, giving gyaan on chapters of art of living, inner beauty or doing what the heart says. Much as it attempts to not sound or seem preachy, trying to support it's doctrine with anecdotes and examples, the second half still ends up like a lecture on moral science. And much like an average audience, even Aditya shows opposition to Benaam Kumar's idealism until he finally gives in. The film tries best to keep these proceedings lighthearted, but with a genre like this, it's difficult to avoid the trappings of a moral tone.Thankfully director Pramod Joshi has the sensitivity to handle a subject like this and succeeds to touch your heart, at least intermittently. The film has its share of glitches though. Like Anupam Kher's half-baked character has an unnecessary mysterious streak to it. One never understands why Aditya seeks solution of his problem from this randomly introduced character. His initial appearances in the plot add to the puzzle. Further, by the end, his character takes the shape of a selfless person who, with his simplicity, changes life of people around him - pretty much like what Rajesh Khanna did in Bawarchi. Alas his presence doesn't come across as enigmatically as it was meant to be.Despite the same set of sequences repeating throughout the film, the narrative never seems monotonous thanks to the smart editing. The music is functional but an item number that pops up from nowhere was avoidable.In an author-backed role, Sachin Khedekar pulls off the protagonist convincingly, expressing a wide gamut of emotions. Anupam Kher comes into form only in the second half and breathes life into the protagonist and the picture. Atul Parchure as Aditya's friend puts in a decent act.'Even if you lose eyes, don't lose vision' is what the film endorses. Despite its visible loopholes, it still has a perspective and tries to make a point. For its noble intentions, Chhodo Kal Ki Baatein is watchable.
