Founded in the 7th century, these ruins have much history, a burial place of three kings in the Benedictine priory within the moated castle. A constant target from the Danes in the 800‘s, firstly in the year 800 when the priory was plundered, another attack in 832, though this time was unsuccessful due to the fortifications put in place by the monks, another attack in 865 saw the church and monastery destroyed and the nuns of St. Hilda massacred, the priory plundered again in 870, yet another attack five years later saw the priory destroyed in 875.
The castle was a santuary and place of refuge in times of trouble for many throughout the years including Kind Edward 11 in 1312.
The photograph has been given an old fashioned antique sepia tone effect.
