Delicately handmade plate/ plaque consisting of Coppers, Silver Plate, Brass and other metals. This unique metal wall hanging is made by Hosny Gomaa of Eqypt (registered in Cairo as Silversmiths). The detail in the plate is fantastic. Dates to the mid 1980's. Measures 5.25" in diameter.
This plate has a Sphinx with pyramids in the background. Rimmed with Uraeus's, the Egyptian symbol for protection and supreme power. Uraeus is the cobra, an emblem of Lower Egypt. It is associated with the king, and kingdom of Lower Egypt. It is also associated with the sun and with many deities. The cobra represented the "fiery eye of Ra", in which two uraei can be seen on either side of a winged solar disk.
The Sphinx adores the sun - Ra, the supreme God according to ancient tradition. It waits for it to return each day. It is the Sphinx's adoration for the sun that causes it to rise out of itself, out of the earth from which it is made, to reach continually for the higher level of its being, called by the light. This adoration causes the life within it to become holy and forever striving.
