It reduces bandwidth demand and improves response times by caching and reusing frequently-requested web pages. Squid has extensive access controls and makes a great server accelerator. It runs on UNIX/Linux and Windows. Squid is used by hundreds of Internet Providers world-wide to provide their users with the best possible web access. Squid can also route content requests to servers in a wide variety of ways to build cache server hierarchies which optimize network throughput. Squid can reduce server load and improve delivery speeds to clients. Squid's advanced content routing configuration allows you to build content clusters to route and load balance requests via a variety of web servers.The packages on this CD are categorized as follows:Analyzers, to process the log files produced by Squid and to produce reports. Some also introduce some database functionality. Configurators, which aid in the management of the Squid configuration files, etc.Redirectors, which perform some form of page substitutionTraffic Controllers, which implement limitations on traffic, generally by user/IP/computer name. Other packages, including accounting, quota policy, censorship, security, ...
You will need one or more of the commonly available utilities to expand compressed archives, such as tar, PKUNZIP or WinZip, etc. Most are distributed as source. Programs may need to be compiled, and have their individual installation procedures. The various packages are at different levels of maturity and completeness, and I cannot certify that they are all worthwhile for any particular purpose. You will have to judge for yourself, but there is a lot to choose from.
