The Crusades had broken up the inertia of European society. The feudal system had given way to an established
political system in the form of monarchies. Following the Renaissance Era many European empires began
expanding their national territories. Driven by new ideas, the stronger European nations wanted to take control and
colonize trade, religion, economic growth, and military dominance among the weaker nations. Some empires were
short lived, others were more persistent. Some of the European Empires that emerged as the dominant world powers
from the 16th thru the 18th centuries were: Poland, Spain, Sweden, Austria, Russia, and the Netherlands. Each coin in
this collection represents one of these great European Empires.
