The Medicine Woman Tarot is a warm, charming and finely-tuned Tarot deck, created by Carol Bridges, a long-time student of native spirituality.

The deck loosely follows the traditional Tarot: it has 78 cards, 21 Major Arcana and 56 Minor Arcana. However, each card has been reimagined and reinterpreted in Carol's world-view which draws heavily on Native American spirituality, harmony with nature and love of Mother Nature specifically. As a result, the Minor Arcana are stones, pipes, arrows and bowls (rather than pentacles, wands, swords and cups). The cards contain two titles, one traditional, and one reinvented. And the images are unlike any other Tarot deck frankly that we've come across.

To understand the deck it helps to understand the process by which Carol produced it. Carol has reimagined each card having exhaustively meditated on drawings of that card from many different Tarot decks, to help herself understand different aspects of the card meaning. Indeed, the publishing of the deck was a happy by-product for her: she drew each card as part of an effort to understand the meaning of each card in the Tarot and what it had to teach her about the cyclical nature of life. Carol shared her illustrations with a close circle of people she was studying with. She consciously aimed to convey the meaning of each card without some of the negative images traditionally associated with those cards. Later, urged on by friends, she went on to publish those images.

The resulting deck is infused with love and wonder for the natural world and the positive interplay between ourselves and the Earth we all inhabit.. The 78 cards aim to capture every aspect of feminine strength. The images on each card are joyful and optimistic, but the breadth of ideas, feelings and connotations conveyed is still remarkably deep.

The approachability of the cards means they read more like a modern Oracle deck than traditional Tarot deck. The Medicine Woman Tarot provides a great introductory deck for the Tarot and self-healing newbie, and an intriguing compliment to the more experienced Tarot reader's deck collection.
