Hello. I spent nearly 10 years selling on that other site (you can check my feedback there; It's under the same ID as this one; over 3200 positives, 99.7%). But I thought I'd give this new site a try.
I'm just getting started here, so please excuse the amateur appearance. I'll have the place looking better shortly.

Weird and creepy may come to mind when hearing The Midnight Room for the first time. The air organ-based first song "Twin Ghosts" is a gorgeous and moody minor key tour de force with saturated choir boy harmonies swirling gently over a minimalist background like shadows in a candlelit cathedral. The seven-note simplicity is marvelous and the song may be the most emotionally moving piece that Jennifer Gentle has created. The haunting disposition doesn't last long, though, as the rest of the album morphs from beauty into a much more tense and temperamental (or psychotic) experiment into the realms of Can and Syd Barrett. The album remains quiet, but can still be dizzying at some times, and at others, absolutely scary. Marco Fasolo's vocals are slightly devilish but sung sweetly in a high pitched timbre that sounds like a gnome on helium. Now and then, he becomes playful and barks, giggles, or shrieks before just the song unravels into a giant finale. The endings are always big and startling, like a giant announcement that the exploration is over, where you can imagine the word "Fin" would appear in huge letters in a '60s Italian film. It's not surprising that the band, being Italian visionaries themselves, lists Federico Fellini as a strong influence. The music is timeless and very cinematic, but definitely an acquired taste that slowly grows on you, or one that you sink into a little deeper with each listen. It's a luminous, dissonant culmination of Deerhoof-ish single note riffs, dissonant piano scales, bowed guitars, kazoos, detuned autoharps, chains and acoustic guitars drenched in heavy reverb. As odd as this all may be, there are definite pop sensibilities, "Ferryman" is like if Captain Beefheart composed a deranged version of a Kinks number, and "Take My Hand" feels a little like a single, but in a strange sea shanty kind of way. This is very highly recommended if you're looking for brilliant music that's deep in the left field of art-house indie pop.




Regarding the Artist:
Though most young Italian underground rock bands circa 2000 expressed an open sonic infatuation (like many other groups of their age elsewhere) with Anglo-American post-rock -- often sleepily so -- Jennifer Gentle showed that there was more going on than playing Slint to death. Formed in 1999 in Padua, Jennifer Gentle originally formed as a duo, with 19-year-old Marco Fasolo as vocalist/guitarist and Alessio Gastaldello on drums. The band later expanded to a four-piece with multi-instrumentalist Isacco Maretto and bassist Nicola. With an ear for playful psych humor as well as more epic zoned and stoned space rock, the band won initial attention thanks to a variety of live appearances, notably as the opening act for Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley's side project, Two Dollar Guitar. The band's recording debut came courtesy of a track on 2000's Homesleep Home compilation, alongside such fellow travelers as Quickspace and the Notwist. 2001 brought the group's first full album, I Am You Are, winning the group further attention at home and, increasingly, overseas. A second album, Funny Creatures Lane, and more accolades followed in 2002, as did Wrong Cage, a collaboration with Makoto Kawabata of Acid Mothers Temple. The following year a double CD of Jennifer Gentle's first two albums, Ectoplasmic Garden Party, was released by the Australian label Lexicon Devil. The year 2004 saw the band sign with the U.S. label Sub Pop, who released their third full-length, Valende, in 2005. After an extensive international tour in 2006, they put out two experimental releases, a limited-edition Sacramento Sessions LP and A New Astronomy on the Italian label A Silent Pace. After the departure of drummer Alessio Gastaldello, Fasolo left to record The Midnight Room alone in his Ectoplasmic Studio. This album marked a slight departure from the band's previous sound into more psychedelic and personal territory.

With founding drummer Alessio Gastaldello out of the picture, the ensemble is now masterminded solely by singer/guitarist Marco Fasolo, whose high-pitched voice and fascinatingly twisted songs make him truly unique among his contemporaries. Currents of psychedelia and pop experimentalism run throughout THE MIDNIGHT ROOM, but they are generally channeled into oddly catchy melodies (see the slightly ominous "Electric Princess" and the jaunty "Take My Hand"), resulting in one of the most notable and unusual indie releases of 2007.
