Album notes

Recorded at Conway Studios, Los Angeles, California.
Rickie Lee Jones ventures into ambitious new musical territory on this album, laying her idiosyncratic, jazzy song-poems over a spare electronic landscape of programmed trip-hop. Jones works with programmer Rick Boston, who also serves as coproducer on GHOSTYHEAD, and together they create a layered, atmospheric sound, with Jones's vocals often seeming to float over Boston's drum mixes.
Even "Firewalker," which has a familiar, irresistible pop-jazz sound, seems to break new ground with its industrial-rock edge. Others, like the haunting "Howard," are just plain spooky: "The spirits of all her abortions had manifested themselves into the furniture in the room. There would be a chair, waiting, smiling. The pictures on the wall watched her in disbelief. She'd go carry the garbage out to the sidewalk, come back in and sit with all her children, inanimate, petrified forever." Unsettling but strangely compelling, like the rest of GHOSTYHEAD.
