The legend of Faust has inspired everyone from Goethe to Thomas Mann. Newman's first foray into musical theater, FAUST stumbled a bit on its way out of the starting gate and to date, aside from workshop performances, hasn't materialized on any major stage. However, Newman gathered an array of friends to record the work, including James Taylor, Don Henley, Bonnie Raitt, Linda Ronstadt and Elton John. Newman, not unpredictably, casts himself as the Devil, once God's favorite archangel, trying to regain favor from the picky Lord (Taylor) and return to his former heavenly home.
A wry lyricist and vocalist with a rare sense of timing and nuance, Newman makes dubious lines like "The man who shot you in the head in that Burger King in Tuscon" work as sheer comedy. But in the more kindly hands of Taylor and Ronstadt, the humor falls short. Raitt, an off-color jokester herself, fares far better. Nevertheless, it's the biting wit of Newman that shines through, from the rolling ragtime of "Can't Keep A Good Man Down" to the bluesy dialogue between the Devil and Margaret in "Bleeding All Over the Place."
Editorial reviews
...Newman obviously favors the Devil, and besides playing him, he gets most of the New Orleans shuffles. Eat your soul out, Andrew Lloyd Webber. - Rating: A
Entertainment Weekly (10/27/1995)
...a bit of a mess...but a likeable one....a very modern FAUST--the Devil is kind of personable, Faust is a schmuck, and God just wants to have fun.
Musician (11/01/1995)
Included in Stephen Holden's list of the Top 10 Albums of `95 - ...includes his most corrosively funny songs in more than two decades...
New York Times (01/06/1996)
3 stars out of 5 - ...There's no denying the quality and bite of the songwriting on display here...
