This pair of shakers is special because they mark the very beginning of figural shaker production for the mass market. In the Victorian Era (1837-1901) table salt was placed in salt mills or in open cellars. In the 1930's the use of chalk was common during the Great Depression because it was inexpensive to produce. The evolution of modern ceramics in the 1940's made the production of figural salt and pepper shakers easier and their popularity took off.
Early chalkware can be difficult to find unblemished. Made of chalk, these shakers bridge the gap between the Victorian and the Modern. They stand 2 5/8" (6.7 cm) h. and 2 1/8" (5.4 cm) h.
