CD Sam Q - Secret Bossa Nova Club CD
Sam Qureshi is an Alto – Saxophonist and Composer born in Karachi, Pakistan, raised in Birmingham and based in Manchester since 1997.
Sam has been a dedicated jazz musician for 30 years and has played at top venues Ronnie Scots, the Blue Note Club and featured gig for Radio 1 DJ Giles Peterson. He has also worked with hometown band UB40 and recorded ‘How to Steal the World’ album by personal commission of Ali Campbell in the original DEP Studios.
Whilst in Manchester he was spotted by scouts of Paramount Pictures and given a part as a street busker in the re-make of Alfie. He composed music for TV including the award winning documentary ‘Angels With Dirty Faces’ and broke new ground as the first ‘live’ musician to feature on the 1990s Rave Scene, performing PA’s with legendary DJs Grooverider / Fabio in order to introduce new audiences to improvised music and encourage the exploration of new live music formats.
Sam has been referred to as ' the new ‘Stan Getz’ and he has been invited by New York’s greatest Latin jazz musicians to record with them in the USA. Following the success of his ‘CID’ album which achieved higher chart positions on Internet radio networks around the world then the Blue Note/Verve Label artists the potential of this UK jazz musician and songwriter seems quite remarkable.
STATEMENT FROM SAM
"It is my goal (as it was all those many years ago) to complete devotion and discipline to this higher art-form for its mastery in practical application. I have realized 32 years later that as a jazz musician there is NO mastery. That you are always a student, always in a learning process and struggling to reach the next step of the ladder in your playing abilities. This is an infinite process. This is JAZZ. As well as a career spanning many years I have never sold out as a jazz player. I've been offered work with commercial bands but refused as my jazz skills suffer. I've seen many great jazzers go down this route and “ lose their jazz” Jazz music is very disloyal if you stop playing it for 6 months its difficult to reach a high level once again I have taken on board man prodigy jazz musicians who have amazing abilities. However, they don't know how to play from “the heart” this often happens within the educational jazz systems. They simply wind up painting by numbers. I taught myself to play by listening to the masters. I'm not a sight reader. I use my experiences of life as expression within my solo’s. Therefore, I re- educate the budding jazzers how to apply the skills they have to originate their very own styles and how to control the emotions of the listeners"
