Recorded at Smart Studios, Madison, Wisconson in March 1991.
ELECTRIC BIRD DIGEST was recorded by Butch Vig shortly before Nirvana's NEVERMIND made him the grunge scene's hot producer. DIGEST is the Young Fresh Fellows' most straightforward and rock-oriented album. The band downplays its ever-present and endearing silliness in favor of straight-ahead, crisply played power pop.
On such numbers as the melancholy "Whirlpool," leader Scott McCaughey's songs have a tinge of sadness. Three perkier, punk-poppier compositions by second guitarist Kurt Bloch provide balance while maintaining a separate identity. These songs recall Bloch's work with his primary band, The Fastbacks. The album's highlight is "The Telephone Tree," a sing-along rocker written by the late Jimmy Silva, a longtime friend of the Fellows. Silva also co-wrote one of the album's goofier songs, "Fear Bitterness And Hatred," with drummer Tad Hutchinson. DIGEST is a fine, mature, and rocking pop album.
