Francisco Marto
Francisco Marto, whose iconography features a skullcap on his head and a short jaleca, with his staff and sack of farnel on his neck, was born on June 11, 1908 and was baptized on June 20 at the Parish Church of Fatima.
At the age of eight, she and her sister Jacinta began herding their fathers in the area of Cova da Iria, where, together with her cousin Lucia, they would witness the Apparitions, during which she could only see , Without hearing or speaking.
Driven by the intimate desire to comfort the heart of Jesus, for he said he wanted to give joy to a God who was sad with the grievances to his heart, Francis lived intensely the contemplative prayer. For this, he spent hours in prayer in front of the tabernacle in the Parish Church of Fatima.
This desire to redress the heart of Jesus and to dedicate himself entirely to prayer led him to give up going to school, even though in the apparitions Our Lady of Fatima asked them to learn to read and write.
On October 18, 1918, little more than a year after the last apparition, Francisco fell ill, a victim of the epidemic of pneumonic influenza that devastated the country. Also known as the Spanish flu, the disease had reached Portugal in the middle of that year and in a short time caused the deaths of tens of thousands of people.
On April 2 of the following year, he confessed and received the communion for the last time "with great lucidity and piety", as the parish priest of Fatima writes in the Book of Death, when he recorded his death on April 4, adding : "And he confirmed that he had seen a Lady in the Cova da Iria and Valinho."
He was buried in the cemetery of Fatima, where his remains were exhumed on February 17, 1952, and transferred to the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima on March 13, 1952, resting on the right arm of the transept.http://stores.eCRATER.com/sarajohnshop/
