19th Century Standing Khmer Phnom Da Style Bronze Abhaya Protection Buddha Statue - 13cm/5" Measures – (Height) 13cm/5” A 19th century standing Khmer Phnom Da style Buddha statue from Cambodia . The Buddha is enthroned and stood in the double Abhaya or Protection mudra. A hand gesture that offers reassurance and safety - dispelling fear and according divine protection and bliss to the devotee. This is one of the earliest Mudra found depicted on a number of Hindu, Buddhist, and Jaina images. The Buddha is stood beneath the Bodhi tree, the tree under which Buddha achieved enlightenment. To either side of the sculpture are the Naga serpents offering protection. The Buddha has a peaceful countenance with downcast introspective eyes and a firm brow. His earlobes are stretched long from a youth spent as a prince wearing heavy gold earrings. The peaceful countenance of Lord Buddha exudes harmony. The casting is beautiful as you can see in the fine details of the face. Each detail is rendered perfectly. The distinctive patina of the piece is also particularly delightful.
