Lot of three authentically signed items from ex-Minnesota Senator Eugene J. McCarthy (1916-2005).
Former Minnesota congressman (1949-59), U.S. senator (1959-71) and Democratic presidential candidate, most notably in 1968 when he ran on an anti-Vietnam War platform. Served with the U.S. Army in World War II as a code breaker for Military Intelligence.
McCarthy signed all three items in 1973 while working as an editor at Simon & Schuster, Inc. in New York.
You receive:
*4 1/2 x 9 1/2 inch clipped Associated Press newspaper photo picturing the ex-senator at his editorial office at Rockefeller Center in New York. Signed in black ink: "To Chaw Manks Column with best wishes Eugene McCarthy."
*7 x 7 inch white cloth quilt block signed in black ink: "Eugene J. McCarthy."
*3 x 5 index card with typewritten message: "Eugene McCarthy - will you autograph this photo as well as this card and this Quilt block. I do think you are great man. Good luck and your job (sic)..hope some day to write a book for your firm..Chaw Mank." Duly signed in black ink: "Eugene McCarthy."
*Original Simon & Schuster, Inc. mailing envelope housing all three items postmarked New York, N.Y., Jul 19, '73
Overall excellent condition. Newspaper clipping could be expertly trimmed and mounted/matted. So too with the quilt block and index card.
No doubt as to authenticity. Autographs come from McCarthy's post-Senate career.
Provenance: This item comes directly from the estate of Charles "Chaw" Mank Jr. (1902-1985), noted songwriter, author, bandleader, record producer, sheet music publisher, psychic, radio personality, silent movie theater organist, world champion pen pal, inveterate collector and Hollywood/music fan club pioneer.
