Antique Carnelian Intaglio Cameo Pendant Gold c.1890 Neo Classic Victorian Snakes Dragon

An Exquisite Antique Victorian Carnelian Intaglio Cameo Pendant in Gold, circa 1890 Fin de Cicle, Neo-Classic with Snake or Dragon Design. This fine antique piece is made of hand carved carnelian and antique yellow gold shell. The period around the Turn of the Last Century was filled with Neo Classic styles that were revived from antiquity, including Greek and Roman classic designs. The influence came from excavations of ancient ruins that were done around this time. The snake is seen in many ancient designs. The pendant holds a piece of carnelian stone. The carnelian stone measures about 20 x 22mm. The bezel is composed of antique yellow gold shell with some gold loss as seen where there is white metal showing. It comes with the gunmetal chain with sterling clasp measuring about 16 inches long. This piece measures about 1 1/2 inches long with bail by about 1 1/8 inches wide from side to side. The piece dates to the Victorian Era and a rare find with the snake or dragon design. An exceptional antique piece.
