In Negro Folk Rhymes is to be found a considerable part of the musical and poetical life records of a people. It covers many of the slave songs, stories and chants. A large collection of rhymes used as the foundations of Negro folk songs, as well as a concise and insightful study by the Fisk University professor. Talley wrote down a lot of the folk songs of African Americans in rural Tennessee. He collected hundreds of songs and published them in this wonderful find for the collector.
A must have for any serious collector of this subject matter. The folklore of African-Americans is a rich and wonderful subject, but until the rise of folks like Zora Neale Hurston and J. Mason Brewer in the 1930s, most educated Blacks were too scornful of their own folk culture to record it, thus it was up to white writers such as Joel Chandler Harris to preserve them, with varying results depending on the collector.
As Talley himself mentions in his introduction of "The Negro Traditions", few Blacks in those days were willing to be candid with the white compilers of this material. Thomas W. Talley was on the verge of a cultural revolution. A professor at Fisk University, he was one of the few educated Blacks of his day who saw value in Black folk traditions and recalled the tales of his parents and other ex-slaves in rural Tennessee for his book "The Negro Traditions" in the 1920s. Unfortunately, the manuscript was never published and remained unread at Fisk University for 58 years, until the editors with the assistance of Talley's daughter and grandson brought it to light.
In the world of chemistry Thomas Talley is best known for being the teacher who encouraged St. Elmo Brady to aim high in his career goals. But even though Talley was the chair of the chemistry department at Fisk University for 25 years, today he is best known in the world of music. Talley loved all kinds of music, not just folk tunes. He wrote the Christmas carol "Behold that Star" and was director of the Mozart Society at Fisk.
