Harlequin Glorybower is a sensational, late-flowering, large deciduous shrub or small tree that grows 10 to 20 feet tall and is suitable for gardens of most sizes. It must be trained to grow as a tree and is rarely seen growing in that form. It is native to China and Japan and is best noted for its late summer flowers, showy fruit and malodorous foliage. In late summer this tree is festooned with beautiful 6 to 9 inch clusters of delightfully fragrant, white tubular flowers. Flowers are followed by small bright blue, metallic-looking fruits, each subtended by a fleshy red calyx. The fruit should not be eaten. Leaves are 5 to 8 inches long, dark green, opposite, toothed to entire, ovate and covered with a soft fuzz. When bruised, the leaves produce an aroma reminiscent of peanut butter.
