This is both a story of the invasion of the future Earth but also a story of man trying to live in peace with mankind.

It is the third cycle of mankind. Society is a tightly structured system of guilds that inserts every human being into a clearly defined role. The old Watcher, whose job is to scan the skies for foreigtl invaders, is travelling to the ancient city of Roum. His companion is the lithe, delicate Flier, A vuela, whose fragile nightwings cannot withstand the Sun's furious daytime heat. Gorman, one of this future society's outcasts, a Changeling, tricks the Watcher into revealing the apathy with which he has come to regard his endless task, and, in this momentary lapse, the invaders conquer the Earth.

But it is not so much the invasion of Earth by other-worldly creatures that crystallizes this chimerical tale; it is the bizarre, frantic, and astonishing reactions and events that follow that hold our attention. Deftly moving through a descriptive melange of past civilizations and mysteries of future technology, the book focuses more on the human struggles of its disoriented characters than on the unbelievable scientific discoveries they disclose. Class conflicts deepen; bitterness, jealousy, and violence all play their expectedly insidious roles, until a final pilgrimage to the ancient holy city of Jorslem reveals the hope of complete renewal, both physical and spiritual. NIGHTWINGS glorifies not only personal fulfillment and redemption but universal human endeavor, and the salvation that is possible for mankind once a true communion of all Wills is achieved.
