Maalox is a balanced combination of magnesium and aluminium hydroxide (as an algeldrate), which has a potent ability to neutralise acids and a protective effect on the oesophageal, gastric and duodenal mucous membranes. Maalox alleviates pain caused by increased acidity in the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract for several hours.
Maalox is indicated for the symptomatic treatment of heartburn and the gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (rise of gastric content in the oesophagus) in adults and adolescents from the age of 15.
How to use Maalox
Maalox is intended for adults and adolescents from the age of 15.
Always use this medicine exactly as described or as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
Suck or chew 1–2 tablets to treat heartburn and food reflux. A maximum of 6 times a day, but no more than 12 tablets a day.
Do not use on more than 10 consecutive days.
If you feel that the effect of Maalox is too strong or too weak, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
Do not take Maalox
- if you are allergic to aluminium hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide or any of the other ingredients of this medicine;
- if you have acute renal impairment.
Warnings and precautions
- if you have lost weight,
- if you have swallowing difficulty or a persistent stomach pain;
- if this is your first episode of a gastrointestinal disease or if its nature has changed lately;
- if you have renal failure.
If your symptoms persist, consult your doctor.
