A Classic Big Blue

Hosta 'Big Daddy' offers very large, corrugated blue-green leaves. It forms a large mound of slug resistant foliage that becomes slightly cupped upon maturity. A classic "Big Blue" with rich color and lots of texture. The flowers appear just a few inches above the foliage and often develop into fertile seed pods. A classic that has stood the test of time and still remains much in demand. (Aden 1978)

Did you know... Blue hostas are actually green hostas with a waxy covering on the leaves that gives them the wonderful blue color. The "blueness" of a blue hosta depends on the plant age, hosta variety and the location the blue hosta is planted or kept. Sunlight slowly melts the wax off the leaves turning them back to green, thus a shadier location will protect the blue color longer into the growing season. Blue hostas always re-emerge the next year with a new waxy coating, thus making them blue again. Young blue hostas often only develop the wax after a year or more of growing.
