MY HUSBAND HAS BEEN COLLECTING OLD TIME RADIO SHOWS FOR A LONG TIME NOW. HE LISTENS TO THEM WHILE HE IS WORKING IN THE DARKROOM.
WE THOUGHT WE WOULD SHARE THEM WITH OTHERS SO THEY COULD ENJOY THEM ALSO.
We have G.I. Jive, Mail Call, and a few of Jill’s Juke Box, with stars like Frank Sinatra and Fred Allen; Nelson Eddy, Burns And Allen, Ginny Simms and Jimmy Durante, Danny Kaye and Ethel Smith; Bing Crosby and The Andrew Sisters, Glen Miller, Benny Goodman, and a whole slew more belting out the hits. Over 115 plus episodes, and over 35 hours of great Armed Forces Radio Service listening.
The Armed Forces Radio Services (AFRS) has its origins in the War Department's quest to improve troop morale. It began with short-wave broadcasts of educational and information programs to troops in 1940. In 1941, the War Department gave out "Buddy Kits" (B-Kits) to departing troops. They kits consisted of radios, 78 RPM shellac records, and electrical transcription disks of radio shows. With the United States entrance into World War II, however, the War Department decided that it needed to improve the package. Thus, began the broadcasting of its own original variety programs. Command Performance was the first when it was produced for the first time on March 1, 1942.
On May 26, 1942, the Armed Forces Radio Services was formally established. Initially, programming was comprised of network radio shows with the commercials removed. Soon however, it began producing other original programming, such as Mail Call, G.I. Journal, Jubilee, and G.I. Jive. At its peak in 1945, the Service produced around twenty hours of original programming each week.
