Red ginger plants grow wonderfully in containers. Standard varieties will soar to 6 ft (1.8 m) or more. For containers, you'll want a dwarf variety, such as 'Red Dwarf' that reaches only about 3 ft (90 cm) tall with lush, compact foliage. Poking up between the red bracts, the true flowers are small, tubular and white.
Red ginger prefers a warm, moist location in full sun or light shade. A slightly acidic 6.0 to 6.5 pH soil amended with compost is ideal. Blanket with a layer of mulch to slow evaporation, providing at least 1 inch of water per week. Monitor the plants for pests such as aphids and snails.
Red ginger, like other gingers, is an invasive species in Hawaii. However, because it is less common for the seeds to spread, like Kahili ginger, it is a bit less problematic.
