The balsam fir is a native evergreen well-adapted to the cold climates of the northern United States and Canada. Its symmetrical spire-like crown, shining dark green color, and spicy fragrance have made it a favorite Christmas tree for hundreds of years.

Given ideal conditions, balsam fir trees (Abies balsamea) grow about a foot (0.5 m.) a year. They quickly become the evenly shaped, dense, conical trees that we recognize as Christmas trees, but they don't stop there.

Balsam fir grows best in the eastern part of its range in southeastern Canada and the Northeastern United States. This area is characterized by cool temperatures and abundant moisture.

Drop the seed into a hole that is about 2-3 inches deep and cover with soil. Keep the pots in an area that is around 70 degrees F and keep the soil moist. If needed apply fertilizer that has a low nitrogen content.
